The broken emitter board stops sending the infrared beam, causing the control board to believe the bin is always full and halting ice production entirely.
A failed receiver board cannot detect the infrared signal, so the ice maker never receives a 'bin full' signal and runs continuously, overfilling the door ice bucket.
Corrupted optic signals between emitter and receiver can prevent the dispenser mechanism from activating even when ice is present in the bin.
The status LED on the receiver housing should flash during harvest mode; if it stays dark when the freezer door switch is pressed, one or both optic boards have failed and need replacement.

💡 Pro Tip: How to Diagnose a Failed Ice Maker Optic Board
Your part is likely the culprit if you notice any of the following:
⚠️ Ice maker stopped making ice entirely despite water supply being fine
⚠️ Ice maker runs continuously and overfills the bin (won't shut off)
⚠️ Status LED on the right-hand optic housing does not light up or flash
⚠️ Ice dispenser won't release ice even though the bin is full
🔍 Quick test: Open the freezer door and hold the freezer light switch closed — the status LED should flash once per second during harvest mode. If it stays dark, the optic boards need replacing. You can also aim a smartphone camera at the emitter board (with fridge unplugged and boards connected to a 9V test supply) — a working emitter will show a purple glow through the camera lens that is invisible to the naked eye.
