You open your GE refrigerator and notice the fresh food section isn't cold anymore, but the freezer's working fine. That's the classic sign your fresh food evaporator fan motor has died. The WR60X26866 is the direct replacement for models like the CFE28TP2MBS1, GFE26GGHEBB, and dozens of other GE, Café, and Monogram French door units. This repair looks intimidating because you're working deep inside the refrigerator, but it's actually straightforward once you get past the access panels.

What You Need Before Starting

  • 1/4" nut driver or socket
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Towels (for any water drips)
  • Helper (optional, for holding panels)

Estimated Time: 45-60 minutes

Difficulty: Moderate — Requires removing interior panels and working with wire connectors

Safety First

Unplug the refrigerator completely before starting. You'll be working near the evaporator coils where refrigerant lines run — don't puncture anything with your tools. If your fridge was manufactured between May 2014 and March 2015 (serial numbers starting with HD through FF), you'll need a software update after installing this motor. Either call GE service or install Software Update Module WR98R882802 yourself, or the fan won't run properly. This isn't optional — the update changes how the control board communicates with the new motor.

Step 1: Access the Fresh Food Evaporator

Empty the fresh food section shelves so you can work. Look at the back wall inside the refrigerator — you'll see a large plastic cover, usually held by several screws along the edges. Remove these screws with your nut driver. Some models have clips at the bottom; gently pry with a flathead screwdriver. The cover will come forward and down. You might find ice buildup behind it — that's normal when the fan stops circulating air properly.

Step 2: Remove the Old Fan Motor

The evaporator fan motor sits in a bracket behind the evaporator coils. You'll see the fan blade attached to the motor shaft. First, pull the fan blade straight off — it's friction-fit on the shaft. Then disconnect the wire harness from the motor. The motor itself is held by two or three screws into the mounting bracket. Remove those screws and the old motor pulls right out. Take note of how the wires are routed — you'll want the new motor's wires to follow the same path.

Step 3: Install the WR60X26866 Motor

Position the new WR60X26866 motor in the bracket, lining up the mounting holes. Thread the screws in but don't fully tighten yet — you might need to adjust position slightly. Connect the wire harness to the motor's connector. Now tighten the mounting screws fully. Push the fan blade onto the motor shaft until it's seated completely. Spin it by hand — it should rotate freely without hitting anything. If it rubs, loosen the motor mounting screws and shift position slightly.

Step 4: Reassemble and Check Software Requirements

Route the motor wires back through the clips or channels where the old wires ran. Replace the evaporator cover, making sure all clips snap in and all screws are tight. Before you plug the fridge back in, check your serial number. If it starts with HD, JD, KD, LD, MD, ND, PD, RD, SD, TD, VD, WD, XD, YD, ZD, AD, BD, CD, DD, ED, or FD (May 2014 through March 2015 production), you MUST update the software. The control board won't run this new motor correctly without it.

Step 5: Test the Fan Operation

Plug the refrigerator back in. Within a few seconds, you should hear the new fan motor start. It'll be quieter than your old failing motor was. Press the door switch with your finger (the button that turns the light off when you close the door) — the fan should stop. Release it, and the fan should restart. That confirms the door switch circuit is working. Put a few items back in the fresh food section and check temperature after 4 hours. It should drop to your set temperature now that air circulation is restored.

Testing After Installation

Let the refrigerator run for 24 hours, then check both sections. The fresh food compartment should be 37-40°F, and you should feel cold air coming from the vents at the back. Open the door and listen — the fan should stop. Close it and the fan should restart within 10 seconds. If the fresh food section still isn't cooling after 24 hours and you have a 2014-2015 model, you need that software update. The motor's running, but the control board is cycling it incorrectly without the update.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this motor fit my GE Profile or Café refrigerator?

Check your model number against the compatibility list. The WR60X26866 fits most GE French door models from 2012-2020, including Profile, Café, and Monogram series. It replaces older part numbers WR60X10341, WR60X26033, WR60X10356, and WR60X10357. If your model is CFE28, CWE23, CYE22, DFE28, GFD28, or GFE26/28 series, you're good to go.

How do I know if I need the software update?

Look at the serial number tag inside your refrigerator. If it starts with any letter combination from HD through FF (May 2014 to March 2015), you need Software Update Module WR98R882802 installed after replacing the motor. Without it, the fan will cycle incorrectly and you'll still have cooling problems. If your serial number starts with GD or earlier, or GD or later, you don't need the update.

Why is my freezer cold but fresh food section warm?

That's exactly what happens when the fresh food evaporator fan motor fails. The freezer has its own cooling system, but the fresh food section depends on this fan to circulate cold air from the evaporator. When the fan stops, the evaporator still makes cold air, but it doesn't move into the refrigerator compartment. Replacing the WR60X26866 motor restores that circulation and brings your fresh food temps back down.

Spin the fan blade by hand after installation to make sure it rotates freely without hitting the evaporator coils or housing.
