Your LG top-loader fills slower than usual, or maybe it won't fill with cold water at all. You've checked the water pressure, the hoses are clear, but the washer still struggles. Nine times out of ten, you're dealing with a failed water inlet valve — specifically the AJU72911001 cold water valve assembly that controls water flow into your machine.

This valve sits at the back of your washer where the supply hoses connect. It's an electrically-controlled solenoid valve that opens when the washer needs water. When it fails, you'll notice incomplete fills, extended wash cycles, or error codes related to water supply. The good news? It's one of the more straightforward washer repairs you can tackle yourself.

What You Need Before Starting

This repair works on LG models WT-H550, WT-H550W1, WTG6534W, and similar top-loaders, plus Kenmore models in the 795.716xx series that use LG components. Here's what you'll need:

  • 1/4" nut driver or socket wrench
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Pliers (for hose clamps)
  • Towels (for water spillage)
  • Shallow pan or bucket
  • Work gloves

Time Required: 30-45 minutes

Safety First

Unplug the washer completely before starting. Turn off both hot and cold water supply valves behind the machine. You'll still have residual water in the valve and hoses, so keep those towels handy. If your washer has been running recently, let it sit for 15 minutes — the valve area can hold hot water.

Step 1: Access the Rear Panel

Pull the washer away from the wall so you can work comfortably behind it. Disconnect both fill hoses from the back of the machine — water will drip out, so have your pan ready. The inlet valve assembly is right there where the hoses connected, typically held by two or three mounting screws.

Step 2: Remove the Valve Mounting Screws

Using your nut driver, remove the screws securing the valve to the washer cabinet. On most LG top-loaders, there are two screws at the top of the valve bracket. Support the valve with one hand as you remove the last screw — it's heavier than it looks.

Step 3: Disconnect Internal Hoses and Wiring

Here's where it gets slightly trickier. The valve has internal hoses connecting to the tub and a wire harness supplying power. Squeeze the hose clamps with pliers and slide them down the hoses, then twist and pull the hoses off the valve outlets. Water will spill — completely normal. Disconnect the wire harness by pressing the release tab and pulling straight out.

Step 4: Install the New AJU72911001 Valve

Position your new valve in the same orientation as the old one — there's usually only one way it'll line up with the mounting holes. Connect the wire harness first (you'll hear it click). Then reattach the internal hoses, making sure you push them fully onto the barbed fittings before sliding the clamps back into position. Those clamps need to be past the barbs, not sitting on them.

Step 5: Secure and Reconnect Supply Lines

Thread the valve mounting screws back in and tighten them snugly — don't overtighten or you'll crack the plastic housing. Reconnect your hot and cold supply hoses to the valve inlets. Hand-tighten first, then give them a quarter-turn with pliers. Not gorilla-tight, just snug.

Testing After Installation

Turn on both water supply valves and check for leaks around the inlet connections. Let water flow for 30 seconds while watching. Plug the washer back in and run a quick rinse cycle. The washer should fill normally now — you'll hear the valve click open and water should rush in with good pressure. Check again for leaks at all connection points while it's filling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this valve work on both hot and cold water lines?

The AJU72911001 is specifically the cold water valve assembly. LG top-loaders typically use separate valves for hot and cold. If you're having issues with both temperatures, you may need to replace both valves, though they usually fail independently.

My washer still fills slowly after replacing the valve — what gives?

Check the inlet screens inside the valve where the supply hoses connect. Even a new valve can't overcome clogged screens. Remove the hoses and look for small mesh filters — clean them with an old toothbrush under running water. Also verify your home water pressure is adequate, typically 20-120 PSI.

Can I test if the valve is bad before ordering a replacement?

Yes. Disconnect the valve and use a multimeter to check continuity across the solenoid terminals — you should read between 500-1500 ohms. If it reads infinite resistance (open circuit) or zero (short), the valve's toast. You can also try blowing through the inlet while applying 120V to the terminals (carefully!), but honestly, if you're having fill problems and the screens are clean, just replace it.

Take a photo of the wire harness and hose connections before disconnecting anything — makes reassembly foolproof.
