You slide the bottom rack out to load the dishwasher, and it catches, jerks, or completely derails from the track. Nine times out of ten, it's because one or both of the rack slide end caps — the little plastic nubs that keep the rack gliding smoothly on the rails — have cracked or fallen off entirely. The WD12X10304 is the factory replacement for GE, Hotpoint, and Kenmore dishwashers, and you can install it without pulling the dishwasher out from under the counter.

What You Need Before Starting

This is one of the simplest dishwasher repairs you'll do. Here's what you'll need:

  • Replacement WD12X10304 rack slide end cap
  • Flathead screwdriver (optional, for prying off old cap)
  • Flashlight (to see the mounting points clearly)

Estimated Time: 5-10 minutes per cap

Difficulty: Easy

Safety First

No power disconnection needed for this repair — the rack slides are purely mechanical. The only thing to watch for is the rack itself. When you pull it all the way out, support it so it doesn't drop and dent your floor or damage the spray arm assembly underneath.

Step 1: Pull the Rack Completely Out

Open the dishwasher door fully and pull the bottom rack straight toward you until it stops. Most GE models like the GSD2300R20WW and PDW7712N00SS have a slight lift-and-pull release — you'll feel it when the rack reaches the end of its travel. Lift the front edge about half an inch and pull firmly. The rack should slide free from the rails. Set it aside on a towel or soft surface.

Step 2: Locate the Damaged End Cap

Look at the metal slide rails inside the dishwasher tub — they're the L-shaped tracks mounted on each side of the opening. The end caps snap onto the rear ends of these rails where they attach to the tub wall. You'll usually see one cap cracked, missing, or hanging by a thread of plastic. If you're replacing both sides (recommended if one failed), check both rear rail ends.

Step 3: Remove the Old Cap

If there's still a piece of the old cap attached, gently pry it off with your fingers or a flathead screwdriver. The caps have small tabs that clip into slots on the rail end. They're not glued — just press-fit. Wiggle it side to side while pulling backward. If it's completely gone, you're already ahead.

Step 4: Install the WD12X10304 Replacement Cap

Line up the new WD12X10304 end cap with the rear of the slide rail. You'll see a rectangular opening in the cap that fits over the rail's end profile. Press firmly straight back until you hear or feel a solid click — that's the internal tabs locking into place. Tug on it gently to confirm it's seated. It shouldn't move more than a fraction of an inch.

Step 5: Reinstall the Rack and Test

Slide the rack back onto the rails. You may need to angle it slightly to get the rollers to catch the track, then push it all the way to the back wall. Pull the rack in and out several times — it should glide smoothly without catching or popping off the rails. If it still feels rough, check that both end caps are fully seated and that the rollers on the rack itself aren't damaged.

Testing After Installation

Load the rack with your heaviest dishes and slide it in and out a dozen times. Listen for any clicking or grinding. The rack should roll smoothly and stop cleanly at both ends without wobbling. If you hear scraping, one of the rollers on the rack may be worn — that's part number WD12X10315 if you need it. Run a short rinse cycle to make sure the rack stays in place under spray pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will this cap fit both the left and right sides of the rack?

Yes, the WD12X10304 is a universal end cap that works on both the left and right slide rails. If both of your caps are worn, order two.

My rack still feels rough after replacing the end caps — what else could be wrong?

Check the rollers on the rack itself. GE dishwashers like the GHD6310L15BB use plastic rollers that wear down over time, especially if you run heavy stoneware loads. You'll see flat spots on the wheels. The roller assembly is a separate part, but it's still a simple snap-in replacement.

Can I just glue the old cap back on instead of replacing it?

Don't. The end caps take repeated impact every time you close the rack, and adhesive won't hold up to the lateral stress. A cracked cap will break again within days, and you'll be right back where you started. Spend the $23 and do it right.

Replace both end caps at the same time — if one failed, the other is probably close behind.
