If the motor has shorted out or failed mechanically, the drum will no longer rotate. Replacing the drive motor restores full drum rotation via the drive belt.
A failed drive motor or its integrated centrifugal switch prevents the dryer from starting. The drum may remain stationary even when the timer advances.
An overheating or worn motor trips its internal thermal overload protector, causing the dryer to shut off mid-cycle and requiring cool-down time before it restarts.
The built-in centrifugal switch controls the heat circuit. If this switch inside the motor fails, the dryer will tumble but produce no heat on electric or gas models.
A seized or failing motor will hum or buzz when the Start button is pressed but the drum won't turn — a clear sign of motor failure requiring replacement.
Worn motor bearings produce a loud screeching or grinding sound during operation. Once bearings fail, the motor must be replaced as bearings are not serviceable separately.

💡 Pro Tip: How to Confirm Your Drive Motor Has Failed
Your part is likely the culprit if you notice any of the following:
⚠️ Dryer hums or buzzes loudly when you press Start but the drum never turns
⚠️ Dryer runs fine while you hold the Start button but stops the moment you release it
⚠️ Dryer shuts off mid-cycle and won't restart until it cools down (motor thermal overload tripping)
⚠️ Dryer drum spins but produces no heat (failed centrifugal switch inside motor)
⚠️ Loud screeching, squealing or grinding noise during operation (worn motor bearings)
🔍 Before ordering, first rule out a blown thermal fuse, bad door switch, or obstructed blower wheel — these are cheaper fixes. With the belt removed, spin the blower wheel by hand; if it turns freely but the motor still only hums, the motor is confirmed faulty. Test run winding resistance: terminals 4→5 should read 2.4–3.6 Ω; start winding (terminal 4→copper wire at terminal 3) should read 2.4–3.8 Ω. Open circuit = bad motor.
