Furnace ignites normally but shuts off after 2–10 seconds and repeats the startup sequence. The defective sensor fails to pass microamp current through the flame to the control board, triggering a safety shutoff.
The control board receives no flame-confirmation signal, so it never opens the gas valve. Replacing the sensor restores proper flame detection and allows the valve to open and remain open.
After 3 failed ignition attempts the board enters a hard lockout requiring a manual reset. A failed or oxidized flame sensor is the most common cause of repeated lockout codes.
Control boards on Trane XR80, XR90, XB80, XE80 and American Standard equivalent units display a specific fault code for flame-sensor failure or open-sensor circuit. Replacing SEN01114 clears the fault.
