Whirlpool & Maytag Top Load Washer Upper Agitator Parts — Models & Compatibility

If your Whirlpool or Maytag top-load washer isn't agitating properly during wash cycles, the upper agitator assembly is usually the culprit. This W10836692 replacement fits the WTW and MVWC series washers that were manufactured from roughly 2013 onward. It's the piece that actually moves your clothes around during the wash cycle — when it cracks or the dogs inside wear out, you'll notice clothes coming out just as dirty as they went in.
Is This the Right Part for Your Model?
Check your washer's model number before ordering. On most Whirlpool top-loaders, you'll find a white sticker inside the washer lid or along the top rim of the wash tub. Look for model numbers starting with WTW4855, WTW4955, WTW4655, MVWC416, or 4KWTW series. This agitator also replaces older part numbers AP5988691, W10680220, 4363274, and PS11727882 — so if you're replacing one of those, this is your direct replacement.
About This Replacement Agitator
The W10836692 is the complete upper agitator assembly for Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, and Amana top-load washers. This is the part that sits on top of the lower agitator base and creates the back-and-forth twisting motion that scrubs your clothes. Inside, there's a set of plastic dogs (ratcheting cogs) that engage with the agitator base. Over time, these dogs wear down or the outer housing cracks from heavy loads, causing the agitator to spin freely without actually moving the clothes. You'll know it's failed when the agitator spins loosely in your hand or when clothes aren't getting clean despite running full cycles.

Installation Overview
This is one of the simpler washer repairs. You'll need to remove the fabric softener dispenser cap (if equipped), then unscrew the bolt holding the old agitator in place. Most models use a 7/16" hex bolt. Lift the old agitator straight up, drop the new one onto the agitator base, and secure it with the bolt. The whole job takes about 10 minutes with basic hand tools. Just make sure the agitator dogs inside are properly aligned when you set it down — you should feel it engage with a slight click.
Why Upper Agitators Fail
The plastic dogs inside the agitator wear down from constant friction during wash cycles. Overloading the washer accelerates this wear. You might also see cracks in the outer plastic housing, especially if you've been washing heavy items like comforters or work jeans regularly. Once those dogs are rounded off, the agitator can't grab the base anymore, so it just spins uselessly while your clothes sit there.
