This Part Fixes These Problems

Frost Buildup in Freezer

Ice accumulates heavily on evaporator coils because the thermostat has failed open and never signals the defrost heater to activate, allowing frost to build up into a solid block.

Freezer Not Defrosting

The automatic defrost cycle fails to complete. The bi-metal thermostat is stuck open so the heater never receives the signal to turn on and melt accumulated ice.

Refrigerator Section Too Warm

Frost-choked evaporator coils block airflow from the freezer into the fresh food compartment, causing the fridge side to warm up even when the compressor runs normally.

Freezer Section Too Warm

When the thermostat sticks closed and doesn't open, the defrost heater runs too long and raises freezer temperatures above safe food-storage levels.

Compressor Runs Continuously

With iced-over coils reducing cooling efficiency, the compressor runs non-stop trying to maintain temperature, leading to excessive energy use and potential compressor wear.

Fridge or Freezer Too Cold

A thermostat that stays closed causes the defrost heater to cycle on and off erratically, resulting in temperature swings that make sections either too cold or unpredictably warm.

Product Description

Why Choose Our WPW10225581 Bimetal Defrost Thermostat?

🔧
Built to OEM SpecificationsEngineered to match the original Whirlpool L7.4–15.2C bi-metal defrost thermostat spec. Closes at approximately 15°F and opens at 40–45°F to protect evaporator coils during every defrost cycle.
❄️
Protects Your Evaporator CoilsClips directly onto the evaporator coil and monitors temperature. When the set point is reached, it signals the defrost heater to activate and melt frost buildup, preventing ice-choked coils.

💰
Save vs. OEM Retail PriceOEM units retail around $33–$40 at major parts retailers. Our aftermarket replacement delivers the same performance at a fraction of the cost — no service call needed.

💡 Pro Tip: How to Confirm a Bad Defrost Thermostat

Your part is likely the culprit if you notice any of the following:

⚠️ Heavy frost or solid ice block on evaporator coils behind freezer back wall

⚠️ Freezer is not completing its automatic defrost cycle

⚠️ Refrigerator section is too warm while freezer appears normal

⚠️ Compressor runs continuously without cycling off

🔍 Diagnosis Tip: Set your multimeter to continuity mode and probe both thermostat terminals while the part is cold (below 15°F / -9°C). A good thermostat shows continuity when cold and opens (no continuity) once it warms above 40–45°F. No continuity when cold = failed open thermostat. Always test the defrost heater (WP2323198) and defrost control board (4388932) in the same session to rule out other causes before ordering.

Questions & Answers

How do I know if my WPW10225581 defrost thermostat is bad before I order?
Answered by Support Team  ·  Mar 15, 2024
Set your multimeter to continuity mode. Remove the thermostat from the fridge and let it get cold (below 15°F / -9°C) — you can place it in the freezer for 10 minutes. Probe both terminals: a good thermostat shows continuity when cold. If you get no reading when cold, the thermostat has failed open and must be replaced. Also check the defrost heater (WP2323198) for continuity while you have everything apart.
Does wire polarity matter when splicing in the new thermostat?
Answered by Support Team  ·  Nov 20, 2023
No. The bi-metal defrost thermostat is a simple on/off switch with no polarity. As long as you make 1-to-1 wire connections (one harness wire to each thermostat lead), the repair will work correctly. Use 14–16 gauge heat-shrink butt connectors for a safe, moisture-resistant splice.
My freezer has a solid block of ice around the evaporator coils. Do I need to defrost it before replacing the thermostat?
Answered by Support Team  ·  Jan 8, 2025
Yes — always defrost the evaporator before replacing the thermostat. Unplug the refrigerator and allow natural thawing, or carefully use a heat gun or hair dryer on low to melt the ice. Never chip ice with sharp tools as you risk puncturing the refrigerant tubing. Once clear, the thermostat location and mounting clip will be much easier to access.
Will this replacement thermostat fit my Kenmore side-by-side refrigerator?
Answered by Support Team  ·  Jul 22, 2024
Yes, provided your Kenmore was manufactured by Whirlpool (model numbers starting with 106, 10641, 10658, etc.). This thermostat is cross-compatible with Whirlpool-platform refrigerators sold under Kenmore, Maytag, KitchenAid, Amana, Roper, Estate, Crosley, and Jenn-Air brand names. Verify your model number against our compatibility list before ordering.
After replacing the thermostat the freezer still isn't defrosting — what else should I check?
Answered by Support Team  ·  Feb 10, 2026
If the new thermostat doesn't resolve the issue, test the defrost heater (OEM part WP2323198) for continuity with a multimeter — a broken heater element is the second most common cause. If both the thermostat and heater test good, the defrost control board (part 4388932) or defrost timer (W10822278) is likely at fault and will need replacement.
